How to Become a BCBA: A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Career in ABA

If you’re passionate about helping children grow, communicate, and thrive, a career as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) can be incredibly rewarding.

Whether you’re just discovering Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or you’re already working as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), this guide will walk you through exactly what it takes to become a BCBA—and how to set yourself up for success along the way.

What is a BCBA?

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level clinician who designs, oversees, and evaluates ABA therapy programs.

BCBAs:

  • Conduct assessments and create individualized treatment plans
  • Supervise RBTs and clinical teams
  • Analyze data to guide decision-making
  • Collaborate with families and other providers

At Mosaic Pediatric Therapy, BCBAs play a critical role in delivering high-quality, clinician-led care that drives meaningful outcomes for children and families.

Step 1: Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

The first step toward becoming a BCBA is completing a bachelor’s degree.

Common fields include:

  • Psychology
  • Education
  • Behavior Analysis
  • Human Services or related disciplines

While your major doesn’t have to be specific to ABA, having a relevant background can help you build foundational knowledge early on.

Step 2: Gain Experience in the Field (Optional—but Highly Recommended)

Many future BCBAs begin their journey as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) or Behavior Technician (BT).

This hands-on experience allows you to:

  • Work directly with children receiving ABA therapy
  • Learn core ABA principles in real-world settings
  • Confirm your interest in the field before committing to graduate school

At Mosaic, many team members start in entry-level roles and grow into clinical leadership positions—building their careers step by step.

Step 3: Earn a Master’s Degree in ABA or a Related Field

To become a BCBA, you must complete a master’s degree in:

  • Applied Behavior Analysis
  • Psychology
  • Education
  • Or another approved field with ABA coursework

Your program must include coursework that aligns with requirements set by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), which governs BCBA certification.

Step 4: Complete Supervised Fieldwork Hours

In addition to your degree, you’ll need to complete supervised fieldwork experience.

This typically includes:

  • 1,500–2,000 hours of supervised experience (depending on the pathway)
  • Ongoing supervision by a qualified BCBA
  • Hands-on application of ABA principles

This is one of the most important parts of your journey and it’s where classroom knowledge becomes real clinical skill.

At Mosaic, programs like our Behavior Analyst in Training (BAT) program are designed to:

  • Help you accrue hours efficiently
  • Provide structured supervision and mentorship
  • Support your transition from student to BCBA

Step 5: Pass the BCBA Certification Exam

Once you’ve completed your degree and fieldwork hours, you’ll be eligible to sit for the BCBA exam.

The exam assesses your knowledge across key areas, including:

  • Behavior assessment
  • Intervention and skill acquisition
  • Ethics and professional conduct
  • Data analysis

Passing this exam earns you the BCBA credential—officially launching your career as a behavior analyst.

Step 6: Maintain Your Certification

Becoming a BCBA is just the beginning. To maintain certification, you must:

  • Complete continuing education units (CEUs)
  • Follow ethical guidelines
  • Stay up to date with best practices in the field

At Mosaic, we support ongoing growth through CEU opportunities, mentorship, and leadership development pathways.

How Long Does It Take to Become a BCBA?

Most people complete the process in 6-7 years total, including:

  • 4 years for a bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years for a master’s program
  • Fieldwork hours completed during or after graduate school

However, timelines can vary especially if you’re working in the field while earning your degree.

Why Become a BCBA?

A career as a BCBA offers the opportunity to:

  • Make a meaningful, measurable impact in children’s lives
  • Build a long-term, growing career in healthcare
  • Take on leadership and mentorship roles
  • Work in a field grounded in science and outcomes

At Mosaic, our BCBAs are at the center of everything we do—guiding care, supporting teams, and driving impact in the communities we serve.
