Understanding the RBT Role: The Heart of ABA Therapy

At Mosaic Pediatric Therapy, every child’s journey is guided by a dedicated team of professionals working together to help them reach their full potential. One of the most essential members of that team is the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)—the compassionate, hands-on professional who works directly with children in our clinics each day.

While families often meet our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) during the assessment and planning process, it’s the RBT who turns those plans into action through daily, meaningful interactions that bring learning to life.

What is an RBT?

An RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is a nationally certified paraprofessional in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). RBTs are trained to implement individualized therapy programs designed by a BCBA to support children in building communication, social, and daily living skills.

At Mosaic, our RBTs are the heart of every session—they are the ones celebrating each new word spoken, every goal mastered, and every joyful breakthrough moment.

What Does an RBT Do Each Day?

An RBT’s day is full of purpose and play. Under the supervision of a BCBA, RBTs:

  • Work one-on-one with children to teach new skills through play-based learning
  • Collect data to track progress and ensure therapy remains effective
  • Implement strategies to reduce challenging behaviors and promote positive alternatives
  • Support children in developing independence in daily routines and communication
  • Collaborate with families and clinical teams to ensure consistent care

A typical day might include building with blocks to encourage communication, leading story time, playing interactive games, supporting snack time with peers, or even creating an obstacle course in the gym to build motor and social skills. RBTs also work closely with fellow team members throughout the day, sharing ideas, celebrating wins, and supporting one another.

Every day looks different because every child is unique—but the goal remains the same: to help each child learn, grow, and thrive.

The Relationship Between RBTs and BCBAs

RBTs and BCBAs work hand-in-hand. The BCBA designs the treatment plan, analyzes data, and adjusts programming based on progress. The RBT carries out that plan, providing direct therapy and real-time insight into each child’s success. It’s a true partnership built on communication, collaboration, and care.

At Mosaic, our clinical teams are intentionally structured to ensure that every RBT receives ongoing training, supervision, and mentorship—creating an environment where both staff and children can flourish.

Becoming an RBT at Mosaic

For many professionals, the RBT role is the first step in a rewarding career in behavior analysis. Mosaic provides:

  • Comprehensive paid training to prepare new hires for RBT certification
  • Mentorship from experienced BCBAs throughout the learning process
  • Career growth opportunities, including tuition assistance toward becoming a BCBA

We’re proud to offer a path that blends professional development with purpose—because when our team members grow, our children grow too.

Why RBTs Matter

RBTs are more than therapists—they’re encouragers, teachers, and cheerleaders. They celebrate every success, no matter how small, and help children achieve goals that once felt out of reach. Their patience, positivity, and dedication transform therapy into something truly meaningful.
